English Abstract

The study aims at measuring the social shyness of mothers of children with special needs, and exploring the significance of the differences in the social shyness of mothers of children with special needs according to the variables of the type of the child's disability and gender.

However, the sample of the study consists of (250) mothers who benefit from institutes of children with special needs in Baghdad.

Al-Saeed (2012) scale, based on the theory of (Zimbardo, 1979) has been adopted which consists of (36) items.

Nonetheless, the responding to these items reflects the degree of the mother’s sense of social shyness from her handicapped child.

However the scale validity and the reliability of the scale have been ascertained.

Accordingly, the results show that mothers of children with special needs in Baghdad feel a kind of social shyness for giving birth to children with special needs, and themothers of the mentally handicapped and the physically handicapped feel more social shyness than the mothers of the visually and hearingly disabled children, while there are no statistically significant differences according to the gender in the feeling of social shyness of mothers for children with special needs.
