English Abstract

This research investigates the form of the speech act of advice, the style and the strategies used by the speakers of the Friday Prayer Sermons.

The focus is of the study is mainly on the linguistic and stylistic strategies that are used in performing the speech act of advice.

Furthermore, it seeks is to analyze advice-giving more generally.

Austin and Searle, in their speech act theory, divided the force imposed by any verbal action into three layers of force: locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary.

The speech act of advice carries different types of these forces according to the strategies that are used to impose the advice.

The study is based on Limberg and Locher (2012) model that classifies the linguistic strategies into six types with the addition of a seventh type by the researcher.

The study established that the style of the sermons are mostly formal and employs the higher form of the Arabic language similar to the language of the Quran.

In addition, the study suggested that some strategies were used more than the others.

For example, the imperative structure is the main strategy used by the speaker with a percentage of 50%.

Other strategies were less used such as the use of modal verbs 23.3 % and interrogative constructions with the same percentage.

In addition, the conditional sentences were applied only once 3.3 % which indicate it is rarely used in such sermons.
