تشير آثار الثقافات المبكرة، في وادي النهرين ووادي النيل ووديان الأنهار في الهند و الصين، إلى اهتمام هذه الثقافات بموضوعات السكان، و منها عد السكان و مصرفة الذكور و الشباب من الذكور على وجه الخصوص.
