Abstract EN

The isolation of the woman in the holy city of Karbala was not limited to her social surroundings, but was inside the house as well.

She had no outlet of recreation or to go out except by going to the public baths, provided that the veil covers her from head to toe, so that even her husband is unable to identify her if he encountered her on the way.

As for marriage, she did not have any say in her marriage at back then, as the husband was being imposed on her, and he was often a cousin or a relative, that is, to marry her without her consent, or according to tribal traditions, a bride for a bride.

As the girl's personality within the family was abolished in terms if making decisions that related to her, it is possible that her younger sibling would take the decision on her behalf just because he was a male.

As for education, it was not less burdensome than marriage, for educational opportunities were restricted to men, and the nominal and real opportunities for women education were subject to strict traditions as society at the time saw in education as a corruption for women.

The situation remained this way until the end of the nineteenth century.
