British mediation in the American Civil War remained a proposal circulated within the British Cabinet, and the discussion dealt with talks and correspondence that took place between the British political circles in the Council of Ministers and the Foreign Office on the matter.

The research initially dealt with the subject of the war that erupted between the two sides on 12 April 1861, and then dealt with the British position on it and its adverse consequences that might affect British economic and political interests inside and outside the United States.

Then the discussion discussed in detail the discussions and correspondence regarding the mediation proposal, as the position of the government on the issue of mediation was not unified, as the British Cabinet divided itself among them who supported intervention in the war by offering mediation by Britain in cooperation with major countries to end the state of war, and the section The other opposed intervention and preferred Britain to remain neutral and wait for the outcome of the war.

Each of them had its reasons.

The first team found that the continuation of the war would reflect negatively on the British economic performance, and consequently, the economy would be exposed to crises that could not be easily overcome.

As for the other part, it was found that interference in the war must be accepted by the warring parties.

Otherwise, The offer of mediation without the consent of these parties will weaken Britain's political position globally.

In the end, the fait accompli imposed the same on the British decision due to the lack of seriousness of the warring parties in accepting the mediation proposal or even listening to it.
