By applying the tendency of qualitative impoverishment set by antoine berman among the thirteen deforming tendencies, the present paper is intended to show and highlight some deformations that semantically and phonetically affecting the words in the narrative prose.

we have chosen the novel "Midak Alley" (Zekak al-Midak) by the famous writer naguib mahfouz, from which we have selected some rich words on both semantic and phonetic level, comparing them with those of English version by the translator Trevor Le Gassick to show the extent of the semantic and phonetic distortion that affected the words under study.

this is due to the extreme importance of the wording of the narrative prose, and the novel in general, that appears in serving the society and reflecting its reality.by analyzing the deforming tendencies, this significance is also shown, whenberman primarily paid great attention to the novel.
