The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) received widespread attention when it launched an offensive in June 2014, invading Mosul, and exerting pressure in the south as far as the outskirts of Baghdad.

Although the attack and the subsequent announcement of a caliphate had reached the point of “the emergence of an emerging party” for the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, this organization existed in various forms dating back to the middle of the first decade of this century, and the crimes of (ISIS) captured the attention of society.

The international community has received wide media coverage during the previous years, as this organization did not exclude any component of its crimes.

The United Nations has made great efforts in helping Iraq and Syria to document the acts committed by ISIS through the formation of UN committees in this regard, and this has concluded that the acts committed by ISIS are international crimes punishable by international criminal law, and they fall under the jurisdiction of the Criminal Court.
