The study of the population composition is very important, as it sheds light on many demographic indicators, given that this composition summarizes a period of time that may extend to more than one generation, and the current reality of the age and gender structure of the population enables future sensing of how the population will develop in the next phase.

The study showed that the gender ratio in Syria began to tend to be equal for both sexes, while it is still high in the countryside compared to urban areas because of the attention and health and social care for males more than females in the countryside.

The study relied on the use of several measures (gender ratio, relative rate of change, young and old dependency ratio, the ratio of the elderly to the young, the ratio of children to women, age index) The study showed that the shape of the population pyramid for the year 1981 changed from the year 2011, due to the variation in the age and gender composition, and the change in the rates of natural increase, as the pyramid was wider at the base with a gradual slope and a narrow top, while in 2011 the base of the pyramid began to narrow As a result of the population adopting a birth control policy, the youth group became more compact in the middle and the top was narrow.

Hence, the Syrian society has come a good way in the stage of demographic power and is about to enter the stage of demographic maturity.
