Abstract EN

The twentieth century witnessed a marked improvement in health for the people of the Arab Gulf region.

Infant mortality rates greatly declined, and life expectancy increased to 73 years.

In addition, the numbers of doctors and nurses per capita greatly increased, although the figures remain significantly lower than in the industrialized West and Japan.

Although remarkable achievements were made during the twentieth century, there remain important challenges for GCC countries for the twenty-first century.

These include (1) ensuring that all citizens receive top-quality health care for basic needs, (2) promoting greater public awareness of the role to be played by prevention, (3) reducing dependency upon foreign medical cadres by encouraging greater numbers of citizens to become doctors and nurses, and (4) facilitating improvement in the quality of the doctor-patient relationship
