Abstract EN

This study aims at investigating the semantic expansion of the Root Pattern (A-r-b) derivatives in Standard Arabic.

Semitic languages and some non-standard Arabic and Yemeni dialects.

The researcher collected his data from the dictionaries of Standard Arabic, the Holy Quran, some Semitic languages, Epigraphic Old south Arabian languages, Modern South Arabian languages (particularly Mehri and Soqotri), Amharic, Syriac and Hebrew .The nature of this study necessitated the adoption of an eclectic approach including the descriptive approach and the historical approach.

The descriptive approach was employed to describe and analyze this linguistic phenomena while the historical approach was used in analyzing this phenomena through the different historical periods tracing the origin of these words.

It has been found that the derivatives of this root were able to expand their meaning into so may semantic fields so as to cope with the expansion in thought and civilization.

This semantic expansion was achieved through derivation and it was found that Arabic has the highest percentage of this semantic expansion
