Abstract EN
The current study aimed to investigate the efficacy of basil seed (Ocimum basilicum) aqueous extract at 250 mg/kg body weight in the hematological and biochemical parameters of adult domestic rabbits with alloxane-induced diabetes and compare it to the effect of insulin.
Blood tests included measuring the red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), packed blood cells volume (PCV), and estimating hemoglobin (Hb) in blood serum.
The study showed an increase in the red blood cells, white blood cells, packed blood cells volume, and estimating hemoglobin levels in diabetic rabbits treated with basil seed aqueous extract in compared with insulin treated group.
As for blood serum biochemical tests, which included measuring glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, total proteins and urea levels.
The results of the study showed a significant decrease (p≤ 0.05) in glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and urea levels, and a significant increase (p≤ 0.05) in the levels of total proteins in animals with diabetes treated with basil seed aqueous extract compared to animals treated with insulin.
It concluded from the results of this study that the aqueous extract of basil seeds could be use in the treatment of cases of diabetes after confirming that there are no side effects of use.
