Abstract EN

The Encyclopedia of Islam (The Body of Islamic Knowledge) is the largest Orientalist work on the history of Islamic civilization, and it is in two editions, the first was during the years (1913-1938 AD) and it was published in four volumes and an appendix.

A large number of great orientalists from various European and Western countries participated in writing its articles.

However, the Arab or Islamic participation was ent from it, and since the first edition of the Encyclopedia of Islam no longer met the aspiration of the Orientalists to collect everything related to Islamic civilization, and because of the large number of criticisms that were directed at it due to the ence of Arab or Islamic participation, and to expand the work to include a greater number of Eastern and Western researchers, the editorial board did its effort to issue a second edition (new) of the Encyclopedia of Islam during the years (1960-2004 AD) in eleven volumes with an appendix in which Iraqi writers had a share in this encyclopedic work.
