This paper’s assumption is that fiction and the cinema’s adaptation of the same work are different experiences.

Thus, there is no point to make a comparison between them.

In order to prove it, the paper analyses both: the 2011th Man Booker Prize winner (The Sense of an Ending) by Julian Barnes, and the film which adapted the novel in 2017, under the same title, and directed by Ritesh Batra.

'The Sense of an Ending' is a complicated novel; it’s considered under the 'stream of consciousness', as most of its events take place in the unreliable narrator's memory, who happen to be the main character.

Hence, adopting methods & tools from structuralism narratives and film studies, this study investigates the distance between the film and the original novel, to highlight the similarities and differences between both works.

One clear finding is that factors such as different foundations, artistic specific rules, and horizon of expectations, prove it clearly that we are talking about two different experiences.
