Ibn Khamis was mostly known for his rhetoric and poetry, as well as his secretarial services at the Zianid state courts.

He was also known for his unstability- moving constantly from one country to another; from Tlemcen to Fes, Ceuta, Almeria, then to Granada.

His constant moving was due to either political reasons or the opposition of some of his counterparts against his intellectual orientation owing to their envy or their ignorance as he himself put it.

Though eulogy and yearning were the main subjects of Ibn Khamis's poetry, his sufi orientation is quite clear through his expressions.

That is despite the fact that the sources never mention his sufi mentors and masters!
