Abstract EN

The purpose of this article is to enlighten the deep interlink between international migration and the development and the usage of smart technologies as an essential tool in modern social communication.

Indeed, based on statistical data and various social events in the region of Khouribga (Morocco), it has been proved that the phenomenon of international migration, in an era of globalization, has forced individuals to be fully involved as active users of social networks and smart technologies.

Furthermore, it has been empirically demonstrated that the phenomena of migrants’ absence and family geographical dispersion related to the international migration, together with the need to stay in close contact with family members have pushed not only migrants’ adult relatives, but also the elderly generation to learn how to use the smart technology, in a process that could be defined as “Information and Communication Technology literacy”.

Additionally, the usage of social networks and smart technology participated in replacing several past social situations into new ones; such as a “double absence” becoming a “triple presence” and a “fragmented social life abroad” being transformed into a “transnational social life”.
