Fracture of the penis : a five-year experience at King Hussein Medical Center

Objective : to outline the mode of presentation, methods of management, outcome, and the recommendations for treating penile injuries.

Methods : from January 1994 to January 1999, a total of 11 patients with fractured penis were seen at our center.

Ten patients were seen with recent, acute injuries in the Accident and Emergency Department, and the 11* patient was seen in the outpatient clinic three weeks after the insult.

The 10 patients, who were seen with acute injuries, were managed surgically by exploration, evacuation of the hematoma, and repair of the tear in the tunica albuginea using polypropylene sutures.

The 11 patient was managed conservatively at another hospital, as he refused any surgical intervention.

Results : all of the 10 patients who had surgical repair of the injuries, had normal erectile function, except one, who had a minor deviation of the erected penis, which had no effect of his sexual performance.

The 11th patient, who had a delay in presentation, was having a short lasting and weak erection to start with, and later he developed significant deviation of the penis with loss of erection.

Conclusion : we conclude that surgical exploration and repair of the penile fracture is mandatory as it conserves the normal erectile function and it significantly reduces the incidence of penile angulation and deviation.
