The research aims to identify and evaluate the reality of the distinguished school libraries in Baghdad, their application of international and Arab standards regarding: building, furniture, collections, staffing, financial allocation, their role in supporting the educational process, the information services they provide, and their potential In meeting the needs of its beneficiaries (students and teachers), explaining the difficulties it faces, and trying to find proposals that are consistent with the development taking place in school libraries at the global and Arab levels.
The descriptive method (survey) was used to collect data about distinguished school libraries in Baghdad, as well as to conduct interviews with first the director of the school libraries section in the Iraqi Ministry of Education also with officials of the school libraries in the general directorates of education in the capital Baghdad, as well as the librarians of those schools.
A questionnaire was distributed to the beneficiaries of distinguished school libraries (students and teachers) as well as the observation was used, visits to these libraries spread in Iraq.
The most important findings that were reached are: 1.
Distinguished schools lack a separate library building, and most of them are halls with small areas as part of the school building.2.
The lack of information and libraries specialists in distinguished school libraries, the majority of those assigned to this task are from other specialties.3.
The obsolescence of distinguished school library furniture, and the lack of educational and library devices.
4.
Weak financial allocations are allocated to distinguished school libraries.
In the light of the results reached, a set of recommendations was developed, the most important of which are: 1.
The necessity of providing a separate building for the library in distinguished schools.2.
The necessity of providing furniture, facilities, display and educational equipment in each of the distinguished school libraries in a way that suits the modern devices currently used in reading and in displaying various forms of information.3.
Nominating a specialist's staff in the field of information and libraries to manage distinguished school libraries in order to develop them.4.
It is necessary to increase the allocations and financial resources for distinguished school libraries in order to be able to provide themselves with information sources, devices and modern means in storing, displaying and retrieving information to meet needs and to develop services provided to its beneficiaries
