Abstract EN

Objective : the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of intramuscular midazolam on patients during spinal anesthesia.

Methods: Midazolam was used at a dose of 0.1 mg / kg intramuscularly, as premedication for 100 patients who underwent different types of surgery under spina anesthesia in Prince Hashem Hospital.

Results : The sedative effect of midazolam was evident 5-10 minutes after administration, and was maximum between 30-0 minutes (this was estimated by the ability of the patients to responed to verbal stimuli).

The procedures in the induction room and the operation theater were totally or partially amnesic by 95 % of patients who received midazolam and 2 % of patients had undesirable side effects.

Conclusion : Midazolam was found to be a good sedative, if administered intramuscularly ten minutes before surgery.

It can provide anterograde amnesia for one hour after injection, but it is not suitable as premedicani if administered more than one hour before the anticipated procedure.
