Abstract EN

In this paper, the researcher tries to uncover the major milestones and social turning points in the socio-historical processes that produces social stratification and hierarchies and the role of the education system.

These social turns manifested themselves on several pivotal levels in the social spaces and the internal logic that governs them.

Those spaces knew the dissolution of traditional social structures and the emergence of new social processes and structures governed by freedom and equality in the conditions of social existence of individuals, as well as the emergence of the Nation-State and the progression of rationalizing social life.

Among the most important social institutions in this process is education systems and what it represents in establishing the principle of merit and the production of legitimate diploma in the occupation of position in the division of labor and the class-professional hierarchies.

As a consequence The weakening of inherited factors and the increasing of acquired factors (certificates): the principle of Social stratification is achievement, not ascription.

These transformations were reflected in social mobility: through these processes, the movements of individuals between different social positions became fluid and not static, which produced a new representation of the society inside social agents.
