The European interest in the southern Mediterranean region since the events of September 11, 2001 reflects the strategic importance of this region in the interests of Europe and protecting its security.

The European Union has therefore sought to develop its relations with its southern Mediterranean neighbors in the light of the growing security concerns that are threatening the Mediterranean region as a whole, thus defining its geopolitical area and confirming its international presence in shaping the future of the region through numerous initiatives.

However, given the increasing security threats in the Mediterranean region, the European Union needs to rebuild its Mediterranean policy, taking into account the interests of southern Mediterranean partners on common issues.
