Abstract EN

The present study purports to track the component of space in the novel.

This element, besides time and character, functions as a support and a component upon which the narrative discourse is built.

As such, it has been important for us to dig in the space of one of the most important contemporary Algerian novels that abounds with the use of this element.

We have opted for the novel “al-ramadu aladi ġasala al-ma” (The ash that washed water) by Azzedine Djaloudji, to stress the space of the city as being the one often encompassing most other spaces.

We have taken into consideration open spaces especially those subsequent to changes and transformations touching upon the space to describe different social and psychological problems experienced by the character in the novel.

These conflicts are often manifested in the form of oppositions such as life and death, happiness and sadness, etc.

, in an attempt to uncover the semiotic and semantic value produced by the different aspects of this narrative element.

In this study, we have been relying on the principle of spacial dichotomies, which have been a focal point in the study made by the Russian critic, Yuri Lotman.
