Preliminary description of a soil profile at the old farm of the agricultural faculty of Omdurman Islamic University

The Farm of the Agricultural Faculty of Omdurinan Islamic University is located on the western bank of the White Nile between latitude 15° 34' N and longitude 32° 34' E and an altitude of about 393 meter above sea level and 17 Km.

south of the El Engath bridge near Sunt Forest.

The environment of the study area is characterized by semi (desert climate where the soils developed in degradation of Nubian landstone Plain.

The farm is underlain by Sandstone which is known for its aquifer bearing water, moreover recharged from the White Nile.

The farm was studied to examine soil morphology, physio - chemical properties as well as soil classification, water quality and and suitability were assessed for irrigated agriculture.

In the field one profile was dug for morphological description as well three soil samples from genetical horizons were collected for physio - chemical analysis.

Water sample was taken from the near by well for chemical analysis.

The results of the soil analysis revealed that they are monsaline and nonsodic.

The soil is moderately deep developed in Situ in Nubian sandstone with sandy clay loain texture.

The chemical data showed that the soil Fertility is generally very low, especially N and P.

The analysis of water proved that the water of the well is of good quality for irrigation.

The main limitations arc the moderate depth of the soil and low fertility as well as the semi desert dry climate.
