Abstract EN

The settlement annals published a collection of articles by general Dumas in many of its preparation while he was performing his duties as an official for the affairs of the Arab people in Oran province between1837-1841.

Because he spoke Arabic fluently; he was given the task of consul of Prince Abdul Kader, and his activity expanded to the southwest.

In his essay which is considered east and autographic, he mentioned a series of customs and tradition in which the Sahara population was well known.

He described their aspects, roots, the causes of their spread and their attachment to them.

He intended to increase the recognition of the local population in order to dominate them and he showed the methods or ways of controlling them.

This was considered a real gain and another weapon in the hands of the French authority to develop its settlement project in Algeria.

General Dumas has issued a book on the desert region, in which he described its tribes and their interest in raising horses, caring for them whith emotional poems.

He also showed their search for permanent supplies, as well as seasonal celebration and the famous dance for the greenery.

This detailed and accurate description of the Sahara and its inhabitants was intendes to highlight its importance in the colonial project, and the necessity for the French occupier to remain in the region, and to advance to the other frontiers.
