It is primarily caused by human activities and climate change.

Desertification does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts.

This happens because the ecosystems of drylands, which cover more than a third of the land area in the world, are highly vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use, and this directly affects the dimensions of sustainable development that seeks better food, especially by combating poverty and hunger, and rationalizing consumption and production.
