In his criticism of poetry, Abdul-Malik Bin Marwan adopts an Arabic-Islamic stand being a caliph.
He criticized both style and other aspects of language and created a balance between the texts and the outhors in a wise, deliberate way.
His court was alw'ays a forum of men of letters discussing poetry and other literary genres.
He favoured topics dealing with wisdom and inculeating positive values in the society as well as Quranic topics which poetry includes that enrieh it aesthtically.The topies of his criticism were not confined to his age, but they covered the pre-Islamic, Islamic and Umayyad ages and tackled a variety of literary genres and topics.
His criticism focused both on topics as well as the poetic image paying attention to both rhyme and rhythm.
He also dealt with poetesses writing especially eulogy, depending an a deep old background knowledge of history, stories about persons and their family tree as well as important events and W'ars besides his contemporary knowledge of the glorious Quran and prophetic Sunna.
His deep knowledge in Arabic made him on of four most prominent eloquent orators of his age assisted by his knowledge of the dialects of different tribes, witch added beauty and precision.
He was a narrator, a linguist a critic and a coliph.
