Abstract EN

The current study aimed to identify the vocational skills qualifying students with intellectual disability to enable them in the Saudi labor market.

Furthermore, it aimed to recognize how these skills, being taught in intellectual education institutes and programs, align with the up-to-date labor market requirements.

The study used explanatory sequential mixed method design, consisting of the quantitative study which adopted the descriptive-survey approach and the qualitative study that used the conceptual analysis and interpretation of quantitative findings.

The study sample consisted of all secondary schools' teachers of intellectual education institutes and programs along with all superintendents of running sectors in Jeddah.

151 participants took part in the study questionnaire, of whom 20 subjects participated in semi-open interviews.

Results of the quantitative study indicated a high estimation of self-care, security, and safety skills for the respondents, besides the skills related to work behaviors, traditions, communication, and social interaction in the workplace environment.

The qualitative results showed several key issues such as: planning for vocational preparation, partnership with the relevant sectors, job placement, and professional development.

This study recommends integrating the vocational skills into the secondary school curricula, and harmonizing the practices, services and curricula of vocational training programs to meet the recent requirements imposed by the labor market.
