Abstract EN

The complex nature of drama gave rise to translation practices which preserved either the letter or the spirit of the dramatic text.

Hence the double polarization of drama translation theories: readability polarization represented by the traductologist Susan Bassnett and the performability polarization represented by the semiotician Patrice Pavis.

The present research deals with the problematic of the nature of the translation of universal plays into Arabic language; if it is a reader-oriented translation or a performance – oriented one.

Reason for which we adopted a descriptive and analytic methodology based upon the study of names and foot-notes used in the translations of the famous English, French, Spanish Russian and German plays.

The description and the analysis of the nouns’ translation and the foot-notes used by the translators allow to determine the theoretical orientation of the drama translation into Arabic.
