Abstract EN

This article investigates political discourse from a critical linguistics' perspective.

It aims to unveil the ways in which ideologies are expressed at the level of discourse.

This includes the integration of rhetorical toolkit meant to promote a certain representation of reality and influence political decision making.

For practical and illustrative purposes, this article studies the speech of Israelian prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the occasion of Palestine's call for membership in 2011.

The results confirm Netanyahu's use of polarisation between the Eastern and Western world suggesting an inevitable eternal clash between the two.

In doing so, the speech exploits grammatical, cognitive, and pragmatic phenomena for asserting this polarisation.

Netanyahu calls the Eastern world as 'militant Islam', which uses force and violence to defend itself.

This representation condemns the latter and wishes for a peaceful non-existing East to be fostered and nurtured, a case Netanyahu strongly denies in the example of the Palestinian call for membership.
