Concepts in international relations are considered the cornerstone of this field of research.

Competition seems to be the case in international relations; it is the linchpin in the present study.

The concept of competition in international relation is approached from a conceptual perspective.

The concept under investigation is, therefore, identified and outlined against other similar concepts in international relations.

The premise is to come to grips with its semantic features to dispel the confusion with other related concepts such as struggle.

The paper puts forward major definitions for each concept and points out to related concepts, which are often used interchangeably.

Finally, discrepancies are outlined.
