Abstract EN

This article deals with the money bills and the motives that resulted in a bloom in their use in the reign of Sultan Salahaddīn al-Ayyūbī (567-589 AH / 1171-1193 AD), which was one of the most important economic aspects in general and of the commercial activities in particular.

The Ayyūbid state was not different from the other states in the use of the money bills.

The use of these was essential in the development of the commercial activity and facilitated trade between the Ayyūbid state and the other eastern and European countries.

This paper focuses on the development of this aspect during a significant historical epoch: the Ayyūbid.

The reign of Salahaddīn(the subject of this article) cannot be detached from the preceding period, since it is expected to find the background to these bills in the Fatimid period, so it is necessary to shed some light on some developed, related and miscellaneous texts concerning the money bills from the period predating the Ayyūbid period.

The reasons behind the development of these bills in the reign of Salahaddīn have been discussed by concentrating on the factors that impeded the trade and how he could overcome these difficulties by avoiding the dangers and by the use of money bills.

Finally, the money bills that were used in the trade have been reviewd, such as ṣukūk (cheques), saftaja, trade agents and jahbadhs
