Abstract EN

Objective : This is a retrospective study to assess the results of carpal-tunnel release performed over a four-year period.

Methods : The records of 296 patients with carpal-tunnel syndrome treated at King Hussein Medical Center and Prince Rashid Ben Al-Hassan Hospital between January 1996 and December 1999 were reviewed.

Results : Carpal-tunnel release pro vided complete relief of pain and paresthesia in 213 hands (66.6 %) by the first three postoperative weeks and in 265 hands (82.8 %) by the following three postoperative weeks.

Forty-nine hands (15.3 %) had mild symptoms at the latest follow-up visit and six hands (1.9 %) had no improvement.

Conclusion : Surgical decompression of the carpal tunnel by using longitudinal incision under local anesthesia provides reliable good results and high levels of patient satisfaction, if done early.
