The present study attempts to demarcate the zones of potential groundwater in the Western Desert of Iraq using an integrated approach of remote sensing and GIS.
The study area covers approximately 06806 km2, it is arid environment contains a topographic depression of Al-Razzazah Lake .
The geological formations that exposed in the study area are mostly of carbonate and clastics rocks, ranging in age from upper Cretaceous to Quaternary deposits.
The existing Faults of variable trends represent a useful guide to prove the study aims.
The climatic variables of seven surrounding stations are processed for 20 years; it appears that the mean evaporation is highly exceeding the mean rainfall.
The monthly rainfall range between zero and 6060 mm, while the evaporation rates between 597 and 74.7 mm.
Potential Evapotranspiration for the study area calculated using the thornthwait formula and the results of water balance show that water surplus of the study area is 3.66 mm at February only.
