Abstract EN

The current study deals with hyponymy in Kurdish with reference to F.nglish.

Hyponymy is one of the sense (lexical) relations within the domain of semantics that is after intralanguagc relations- the relationships that hold between the linguistic elements themselves, mostly the words.

It is assumed that hoth languages, English and Kurdish, manifest similarities and/ or differences in relation to hyponymy.

Under this assumption, it is hypothesized that this meaning relation is apparent in both languages but not to the same degree.

Because this study limits itself to some domestic animals and their products, it is hypothesized that the nation that has more experience in rural life and depends mostly on domestic animal products for its living has more terms to establish the relation of hvponymy and therefore there are more descending nodes in the hierarchy than the nation that does not have that much experience.

It is also hypothesized that the problems that come into surface concerning hyponymy in English are the same problems that hyponymy may face in Kurdish.

While the first and the third hypotheses are completely verified and proven to be correct, the second one is partially falsified: that is, the first part of the claim is correct: the second one is proven to be wrong.

Even if a nation has more experience in rural life, the number of the hyponyms increases within the same level; therefore, more descending nodes are not added to the hierarchy.
