Many playwrights have rewritten Shakespeare's Hamlet but Howard Barker's play Gertrude the Cry steals the spotlight from its predecessors because it sheds light on the forbidden and the unthinkable with regard to ecstacy and sexuality.

In this play, Barker puts us in direct contact with the taboos associated with sexuality and conventional gender roles via a study of the power struggle between the conservatives represented Hamlet's government and the outlaws represented by Gerturde and Claudius.

Here we find ourselves complled to study, analyse and observe a strange and controversial relationship between Eros and Thanatos, each moving according to its own curve but in unique alignment.

In the light of these interactions, Gertrude embodies the femme fatale figure and embraces the contradictions she represents such as seduction and murder, female sexuality and death in an attempt to restore her vocabulary and her being from the ruling patriarchy.
