The phenomenon of polyphony is considered as a style of writing the novel, since the beginning of the previous century, and continued also in contemporary one, which rests in the construction of the narrative of its speech on a number of partial and short narratives, which form separate and autonomous voices, joined by relationships specific within the framework of the novel's main and overall process, and within the framework of the theme that carries them.

even though the contemporary novel is based on a great awareness of the subject, on the final visions and perceptions, it takes polyphony as element of its narration.

the novel "the jungle of the sea and the mirage" by Mustafa Ould Youssef embodies an example of Algerian novelist polyphony, based on the theme of illegal immigration by the boats of death, and on the theme of eternal loss in its ugliest forms.
