Abstract EN
Fish is a major source of protein for human beings, threating to human health and major solution to dietary protein shortage in Egypt.
The study investigated acute exposure' insecticide profenofos (LC50 - 0.80 mg/l for 96hours) impact on common carp, Cyprinus carpio fish.
The results indicated the exposure of profenofos to carp fish induced significant fluctuations on antioxidant system of liver and gills.
Glutathione (GSH), Glutathione Disulfide (GSSG) and Glutathione-S-Transferase (GST) activities showed highly significant elevation in liver and gills in treated common carp while revealed highly significant reduction in Glutathione Reductase (GR) level in liver and gills during the acute period.
Aspartate amino transferase (AST) and Alanine amino transferase (ALT) enzymatic activities showed marked elevation in liver treated carp while alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was decreased significantly.
Total protein (T.P) of liver and gills treated fish revealed significant increase during the acute period.
The study recorded remediation methods for profenofos (DT50) was 5.8 hours under UV-light (245nm) and room temperature.
Increasing of profenofos degradation at studied pH range (2.85, 6.74 and 8.95) was observed with time.
The study indicated that antioxidant system and biochemical studies can be used as good bioindicators for pesticide intoxication for the exposed carp.
