Fishery and the abundance of fish are considered as basic components in the Moroccan sea and river system and important source of foreign currency because fish is exported to a lot of countries especially the European Union.

However, this natural treasure suffers from depletion which is a threat to its sustainability.

In addition, other species face extinction such as the Chapel fish which has been abundant in most Moroccan rivers that are close to the Mediterranean or the Atlantic ocean especially Um Rabia River.

People in Azemmour and the surrounding regions relied on the Chapel fish for their livelihood cuisine, customs during the French protectorate.

The Chapel fish extinction, due to many natural and human factors, had several repercussions on the social and economic aspect of life in Azemmour.
