Abstract EN

The French educational policy represented one of the most powerful ways of sustaining colonization in Tunisia.

The State of Protection sought to have an educational policy that could play a role in improving the State's image by highlighting its humanistic and civilized face in order to legitimize its colonial actions.

Hence, the main aims behind establishing schools were to create a new generation of Tunisians who would accept the French language and civilization and keep them away from resistance and from all forms of rejection.

However, the Franco-Arabic school did contribute to teaching a number of Tunisians and to professionally training some others.

It also contributed to the social uplifting of those who got permanent jobs at the local or colonial administrations, which enabled them to easily climb the social ladder.
