Abstract EN
Today, food irradiation is a well established technology approved for use in many countries including the United States of America, Canada, China, Japan, the European Union and some Arab countries.
In addition to traditional use, there are situations where food irradiation can offer unique solution to serious problems.
Immuno-compromised people have to avoid high-risk food as they are susceptible to all sorts of infectious complications from microorganisms, particularly those causing food born disease.
Patients with immune deficiency represent a wide range of people including chemo and/or radiation therapy patients, transplant patients, leukemia patients, patients suffering from problems in their immune system and AIDS patients.
In addition, it includes pregnant women, malnourished persons, elderly people and young children.
Food irradiation can offer better and, sometimes unique solutions, for these patients by widening the variety of food items for these patients, increasing the availability and acceptability of foods and assuring microbial safety.
Irradiated food could also be the best solution in many other cases including soldiers in combat situation, astronauts in space, adventures, outdoor activities… etc.
