December 3, 2020 will be the 65th anniversary of the resolution 913, creating the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).

This committee assesses and reports levels of exposure to ionizing radiation.

Such assessments help governments and concerned organizations to take the necessary protection decisions, while the committee does not set policies.

It is a scientific committee and independent , and only the United Nations General Assembly has the right to approve the committee's work program for a period of four to five years.

Organically, the committee was affiliated to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), as this program provides the committee with the services needed, and supplies it with a permanent secretariat in Vienna.

The data and reports approved by the committee are published by the secretariat and are considered the scientific basis for recommendations and standards related to the protection of humans and the environment.

Since its inception, the committee has issued about 25 reports and publications related to studies and assessments of the level of ionizing radiation around the world.
