English Abstract

The massive adoption of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) in the new generation of communication technologies, especially the Terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting DVB-T system, is based on the robustness against inter-symbol interference, high spectral efficiency, and flexibility for implementing medium access schemes, among others.

However, OFDM is highly sensitive to frequency offset, which can come from Doppler spread or the instability of the local oscillator leading to inter-carrier interference problem (ICI).

The ICI appears as Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) on the OFDM symbol as well as a time varying phase rotation while in mobility situation.

Our thesis focuses on the windowing techniques that are used to reduce the ICI effect on the OFDM signal.

On this basis, a suggested window is presented (Convolved Triangle „ctri‟).

This window has very narrow main loop in the frequency domain, in addition to very low side loops power, which leads to very low ICI and improving the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance.

The main problem is the reduction in the spectral efficiency.

Where the spectral efficiency in the traditional Cyclic Prefix (CP) based OFDM signal is 20% raised to 75% using the ctri window.

In the other hand the BER performance is improved up to 4 dB while maintaining a BER of 10-4 in QPSK based OFDM signal, while 12 dB is obtained in 16QAM based signal in fixed communication.

With mobility up to 30 m/s speed that results in maximum Doppler shift of 80 Hz, the ICI starts affecting the OFDM signal at SIR of about 29 dB in urban channels with improvement in BER from 10-3 in traditional OFDM to 10-7 using the ctri window.

The assessment of the BER performance with different windows and modulation techniques is held under the conditions of realistic time varying channel model, the CODIT channel model
