Abstract EN

The Sharif Hussein's revolution against the Ottoman rule in the Hijäz in the first quarter of the twentieth century was a critical period in modern Arab history because it represents a transitional phase from Ottoman rule to the Saudi rule.

Arab poets, in general, and Hijäzi poets, in particular, reacted to the events of that revolution in different ways.

In this context, this research aims, through the use of the general framework of the contemporary anthropologist Arnold Van Gennep's formulate of the rites of passage as applied by Suzanne Stetkevych to the Structure of the classical Arabic panegyric ode, to analyze the poem of (a Step to the Arab Union) composed by the poet Muhammad Hasan 'Awwäd when King Abdul Aziz took con- trol of Hijäz in 1925.

The Study analyzes 'Awwäd's text at two levels: (l) the level of symbols and references to the political passage used in the text and (2) the level of political significance of those references and symbols, and the possibilities of their interpretation.

The Qudy aims to show (1 ) the nature of the sym- bolic language used by 'Awwäd in his text, and (2) the poet's attitude towards the political transition that Hijäz went through in the early 20th century.
