The phenomenon of (code switching) is one of the most important linguistic phenomena that have received great attention in the field of social linguistic research recently, where researchers studied this phenomenon in the context of the second language classrooms, and they were interested in revealing the attitudes behind the uses of this practice among second language learners.
in the field of Arabic studies, we find a lack of studies dealing with this phenomenon among Arabic learners as a second language.
given this, this study tries to explore the attitudes of Arabic learners as a second language towards code switching in the Riyadh institutes, to analyze their beliefs about this practice and the investigate reasons for their use in Arabic classrooms.
the data of this study were collected from a survey distributed to student respondents from Riyadh Arabic institutes.
the results of the study showed that students’ use of code-switching in Arabic language classes performs social and educational functions.
therefore, this phenomenon should not be considered a prohibited practice in Arabic language classes as a second language ; it plays an important role in expressing ideas and thoughts, in motivating learners and facilitating the learning process.
