Abstract EN

This paper deals with the scholars' definitions of the phenomenon of orientalism; which was frequently dealt with by specialists and non specialist, who did not make a clear cut distinction between orientalism and its characteristics and features, henceforth, most of these definitions were not free from prejudices.

Additionally, they were based either on the linguistic ( geographical) meaning of the term, or the stylistic one (civilizational) and this has affected the general meaning of orientalism, consequently divergent opinions were expressed regarding its field of research and differences were raised while defining the orientalist.

This research attempts to give an overall definition to the concept of orientalism through combining the linguistic and the stylistic meanings by a dichotomy of generalization and specification, this will allow us to conceptualize precisely who the orientalist is and raise confusion on other concepts that are intended to substitute orientalism mainly the concept of Arabistic.
