English Abstract
Diabetes (DM) is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide.
However, despite the use of modern treatments to reduce the level of sugar in the blood, people with diabetes are not able to avoid the common complications of the disease such as disorders of the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, hyperlipidemia, and increased disability and thus reduced life expectancy.
In this study, the effect of the Phytosomal hawthorn on the blood glucose level and the hyperlipidemia profile in diabetic rats induced with streptozotocin (STZ).
Hawthorn, a plant endemic to Jordan and used to treat many diseases, especially against hyperlipidemia, anti-inflammatory, hypertension and antioxidant properties.
Although many natural plant extracts reduce blood sugar, at the same time they suffer from decreased intestinal bioavailability and low systemic absorption rate to be absorbed effectively.
Therefore, a phytosome combined with the ethanolic extract of hawthorn leaves was used to study its effect on the oral bioavailability of the ethanolic extract of hawthorn leaves, forming as hawthorn-phytosome complex (hawthorn-P) and thus prospect of enhancing its bioavailability.
During the experiments, the course of treatment was lasted for 21 days.
The chemical content of phenolics and flavonoids of the ethanolic extract of hawthorn leaves and their antioxidant activity were studied.
Two concentrations (150 and 250 mg / kg) were used for both hawthorn and the hawthorn-phytosome complex. Two types of control, healthy and diabetic rats were used.
The results of using 250 mg/kg hawthorn-P led to the relief levels of glucose in blood, cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL (P < 0.0001).
It was observed that the hawthorn-P (250 mg/kg) had higher potential in reducing the body weight of rats than solely using hawthorn.
From this study, it is concluded that the phytosome increases the effectiveness of the therapeutic materials by increasing the bioavailability and thus increasing the absorption of these substances.
