English Abstract

Batch and dynamic adsorption experiments using biochar produced from sewage sludge from Mutah and Mazar wastewater treatment plant as adsorbent have been conducted.

Batch experiments using twelve BC samples that produced under different pyrolysis conditions (temperature, heating rate, and pyrolysis residence time) were tested for adsorption of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and Potassium (K) from secondary treated wastewater (STWW).

The BC sample produced using temperature of 500ºC, heating rate of 5ºC/min, and pyrolysis residence time 45min had the higher uptake of COD and K.

In batch test the removal of COD and K reached 67.13% and 22.18% respectively.

A continuous adsorption study in a fixed-bed column was carried out by using BC sample produced using temperature of 500ºC, heating rate of 5ºC/min, and pyrolysis residence time 45min as an adsorbent for the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), Phosphate (P-PO4) and Ammonia–Nitrogen (NH3-N) from secondary treated wastewater (STWW).

The effect of flow rate on the adsorption characteristics of adsorbent was investigated.

The removal of COD reached 33.55, 35.50 and 37.71 %, removal of P-PO4 was 25.37, 27.82 and 34 % and NH3-N was 12.67, 20.24 and 23.32 %, for flow rates of 10, 5 and 3.33 ml/min respectively.

Three kinetic models, Thomas, Adams–Bohart and Yoon–Nelson, were applied to experimental data to predict the breakthrough curves using nonlinear regression and to determine the characteristic parameters of the column that are useful for process design.The Thomas model were found suitable for the description of whole breakthrough curve.
