Translation has often been associated with literature, and literary criticism has frequently been applied to translations.

for centuries, literary criticism of translations has been limited to analyzing the literary and textual characteristics of translations without referring to the source text, and target texts have been evaluated in terms of quality of the translation, level of the language, style of translator and the way this latter uses figures of speech.

In his map of translation studies, James Holmes (1972) devoted an independent subfield to translation criticism which takes into consideration all the factors involved in translating process.

this research deals with the relationship between literary criticism and translation criticism, and examines a number of reasons which have prompted some researchers in the fields of translation and literature to apply the sole criteria of literary criticism in the criticism of translations, and the reasons that encouraged translators to separate them.
