This research paper aims to highlight the centrality of the eastern Mediterranean region in the Russian security policy, which is confirmed by the theoretical basis of the study - the geopolitical theories of Mackinder and Sebekman and Alexander Dugin - which provided a geopolitical explanation of the interrelationship between energy and security issues and the increasing Russian presence in the eastern Mediterranean.

An impetus for the emergence of a proactive approach in Russian foreign policy towards the region, and its quest to increase its participation in the region’s issues strategically to secure its national interests in both the Rimland and the Hartland region, which has emerged through Russian endeavors to update policies and employ more effective mechanisms to confront the increasing pressures from other global actors and competitive environment stakes
