English Abstract

Solid waste sorting plants are constructed and operated to properly manage solid waste for either material and energy recovery.

This thesis aims to investigate the potential of utilization of commercial solid waste products as recyclable or recovery materials in the existing sorting plant in Al-Karak, Jordan.

Also, it aims at the economic evaluation of the possible improvements that can be installed at the sorting plant in order to ensure its sustainable operation and to maximize profits from selling its valuable products.

A standard procedure had been followed to characterize the commercial solid waste generated in Al-Karak city, then, an economic model was used to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed operational plan for the sorting plant in the near future, which relies on present worth (PW), return on investment (ROI), and payback period values resulted from calculations.

The results showed that the commercial solid waste fractions contain a high portion of recyclable materials of paper, cardboard, plastic, and metals, which accounted for 63 % and recovery materials about 28% of the generated commercial solid waste.

Results for proposed work of the output valuable recyclable products showed that the economic analysis is feasible when working on three shifts at a feed of 11880 tons/year.

Then comparison results with working on two shifts showed that the analysis also feasible when started at a feed of 7920 tons/year.

While, the results of working on one shift is not feasible when started at a feed of 3960 tons/year.

This thesis concluded with some desired administrative solutions for investing in the recycling sector through raising the level of solid waste management in Al-Karak governorate to start the process of preseparation of solid waste at the source.
