English Abstract

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology has been widely applied in different communication systems either to improve the spectral efficiency, to enhance diversity or both.

MIMO implies using multiple antennas at both of the communication ends.

It has been shown that it significantly improve the system performance as compared to single antenna systems.

However, using MIMO in the recently proposed NonOrthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) system is not straight forward.

Actually, it has been proved that using MIMO in the context might not lead to the same performance improvement in other communication systems.

In this thesis, we investigate the performance of MIMO-based NOMA systems.

Consequently, an antenna selection scheme is proposed for MIMO-based NOMA systems to enhance the performance.

Specifically, the proposed scheme implies selecting a single antenna among the set of the available antennas at the base station in a downlink NOMA system.

The antenna selection relies on minizing the average bit error rate at the users’ ends.

Therefore, the base station will check the predicted bit error rate for all transmit antennas, and select the antenna with the minimum predicted bit error rate to transmit the signal to the users.

Our results show that the bit error rate in the proposed antenna selection scheme is improved significantly as compared to the random choice planner and the planner when all antennas are used.

The contributions of this thesis include investigating the different factors in the overall performance of the proposed antenna selection scheme.
